Why Acting Classes Could Be the Best Thing You Do for Your Confidence

Think acting classes are just for people who want to be on screen? Think again.

Whether you dream of becoming an actor, want to feel more confident in front of the camera or simply wish you could walk into a room without feeling everyone’s eyes on you, acting classes could offer far more than you might expect.

Recently, entrepreneur and TV personality Jamie Laing shared his thoughts on LinkedIn about the value of an acting class for those who present to others or are building a brand, calling it the ‘best business course out there!’

At YAFTA, we know that acting is about much more than learning lines and pretending to be someone else. It’s about understanding people, communicating with confidence, thinking on your feet and discovering what you’re capable of when you step outside your comfort zone.

And those skills can stay with you long after class finishes.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable

Standing in front of a room full of people, performing a scene or speaking when everyone is listening can feel terrifying.

What if you forget your lines? What if you get something wrong? What if everyone is watching?

The truth is, even experienced performers have to work through nerves. The difference is learning how to manage them rather than letting them hold you back.

In our weekly acting classes, students have the opportunity to experiment, make mistakes, try again and develop their confidence in a supportive environment. There’s no expectation to get everything right first time. In fact, making mistakes is part of the process.

The more you practise stepping outside your comfort zone, the more comfortable it can become.

Learn to think on your feet

Acting isn’t always about following a script. Improvisation encourages you to listen, react and respond to what’s happening in the moment, rather than overthinking every word.

These skills can be surprisingly useful in everyday life.

Imagine feeling more confident contributing ideas in a meeting, handling an unexpected question in an interview, speaking in public or striking up a conversation with someone new.

Acting helps you become more aware of your body language, voice and the way you communicate with others. It also teaches you to listen properly, rather than simply waiting for your turn to speak.

And in a world increasingly shaped by technology and AI, genuine human connection remains a valuable skill.

Discover what you can do when you stop overthinking

One of the biggest barriers to confidence is worrying about how other people perceive us.

Am I saying the right thing? Do I look awkward? What if I get it wrong?

Acting gives you permission to experiment. You can explore different characters, emotions and ways of responding without the pressure of everyday expectations.

As you practise, you may find yourself becoming more expressive, more adaptable and less afraid to take a chance.

For aspiring screen actors, these experiences also help develop the practical skills needed for auditions, working with scripts and performing naturally on camera.

You don’t have to arrive feeling confident. That’s part of what you’re there to develop.

Your next step starts here

At YAFTA, our weekly acting classes offer the opportunity to develop your screen acting skills, explore your creativity and build confidence through practical experience. People from all walks of life, professional backgrounds and ages come together each week for a fun, engaging class.

Whether you’re taking your first steps into acting or looking to develop your existing abilities, our classes give you the chance to learn, practise and challenge yourself in a supportive setting.

You might arrive feeling nervous. You might stumble over a line or wonder what you’ve let yourself in for.

But keep showing up, keep practising and give yourself permission to have a go. You may discover abilities you never knew you had.
